Urdu / Dakhni idioms with meaning in English- 1

Preface

It has been compiled from various sources but chiefly from the Khazina-e- Muhawarat (1912),by D.C.Phillott & Urdu dictionary, Farhang-i-Asafiyya. Idioms that are not fairly common have been omitted. Collected nearly 1000 Urdu idioms for undertake this little work

Idioms are an integral part of any lexicon. Teaching of idioms across the languages is not a new phenomenon; such studies have been undertaken by language teachers before. It is a fact that teaching idioms has always been very difficult for language teachers due to their figurativeness and opacity. Urdu is rich in idiomatic expressions.

Aabroo per paani pherna – To be disgraced
Ulloo banana – To make a fool of
Apnasa mooh leker reh jaana – To look foolish
Asteen ka saamp banaana / Asteen may saamp paalna – To cherish a snake in one’s bosom
Aasman toot parha – A great calamity
Aasman zameen ek hona – Said on occasion of any disturbance , scolding etc…
Aasman zameen ka farkh – A great difference
Aasman sar per utahna – To make great noise
Aasman ke tarey thorhna – To succeed in a difficult matter
Aasman mey cheydh karna – To patch the sky ( said of a cunning or deceitful..)
Paani may aag lagaana – To work a miracle
Ullu ban-na – To be made a fool of
Aanto may ‘khul huwallahu’ parhna – to be hungry –to grumble in the belly
Aansoo pee jaana – To restrain one’s tears
Aasoo sey mooh dhona – To weep copiously
Aankho mey aakho dalna – To stare impudently in the face of
Aankh mey raat kaatna – To keep awake all night
Aankh may khatakhna – To cause envy
Aankhey bachaana – Avoiding the notice of ..
Aankhey churaana – To cut friend, pretend not to see
Aankhey chath sey lag jaana – To stare at the ceiling – i.e., to be near death
Aankhey lagaana – To gaze lovingly at each other, or fall in love with each other
Aan ki aan may – In a single moment
Aankho sey angaar barste thay – he was very angry
Ungiliyon per nachana –Makes him dance ( as a puppet) .to pull the strings

Aankhon sey girana – To lower in the eyes of; to bring into contempt

Aankho mey phirna – To have ever before the eyes (in recollection)

Aankhon mey khoon utarna –To become enraged

Aankhon mey dhool dalna – to throw dust in the eyes

Aanbkhon mey khub jana – Never to forget

Aankhe samney nah karna – Not to look one in the face (through shame

Apna ullu seedha karoonga – I’ll put matters right with the silly old man ( my master, father, friend etc..)

Awal fawal bakna – To talk rubbish (of the sane or mad)

Awney pawney bechna – To sell for anything it will fetch.

Yek ankh sey sab ko dekhna – To have an equal regard for, to be impartial,

Yek bunt ki do daal – Two parts of a whole,( said of near relatives or even  friends)

Yek zaban  hona – To be unanimous, with one voice.

Eent sa eent bajaana – To  destroy ( buildings, cities)utterly

Eent ka ghar mitti karna – To make a pakka house dust, i.e. to waste one’s wealth

Ayna ban jana – To be astonished, to admire.

Urdti  chidiya ko pehchanna – To be cute

Urhti  khabar – Romour.

Azghaibi dakha – An unexpected blow or misfortune.

Ardhayi din ki badshahat – To be in temporary office 9 said of one who loses his head at temporary elevation)
