Preface
It has been compiled from various sources but chiefly from the Khazina-e- Muhawarat (1912),by D.C.Phillott & Urdu dictionary, Farhang-i-Asafiyya.Idioms that are not fairly common have been omitted.Idioms are an integral part of any lexicon. Teaching of idioms across the languages is not a new phenomenon; such studies have been undertaken by language teachers before. It is a fact that teaching idioms has always been very difficult for language teachers due to their figurativeness and opacity. Urdu is rich in idiomatic expressions.

Baath pee jaana – To bear patiently another’s hard word.
Baat chabaa jaana – To check oneself in a speech, i.e. to pull up on some recollection and keep one’s counsel.
Baat katna – To interrupt.
Baat kursee nesheen hona –to be approved of;advice.
Baat zehan nesheen hona – To make deep impression on (of speech,advice,etc…)
Baat ki baat mey – In a moment.
Baaton ka dhani – Rich in words ( but poor in performance).
Baaton mey urhana – Treat lightly ( but carry off with a laugh ).
Baasi karhi mey ubaal aana – To show fervor or zeal too late; ( karhi a dish of daal spices or saalana).
Baal baal dushman hona – Being surrounded by enemies.
Baan bandhah nishaana urhana – To be an expert marksman.
Baal ki khaal kheenchna – To be hypercritical.
Aala baala bataana – To prevaricate ( but to put off ).
Baavan gazz ka – Very tall.
Baayan paavun poojna – To worship a person; also to admit one’s inferiority.
Baayen haath ka kaam/ kheal – To be an easy task for.
Buth banna/hona – To become speechless.
Bathees danthon mey yek zabaan hona – To be surrounded by enemies.
Bachiya ka pada – a simpleton ( literary meaning- father of a young cow).
Bis ki gandha – a poisonous , or dangerous person.
Bismillah galath hona – To make a mistake at the outset; unlucky.
Bismillah karna / hona – To begin.
Bagal ka dushmen – To be a secret enemy.
Bagal mey churi, moonh mey zikr – Bad at heart but righteous in face.
Bagalen jhankhna – To be rendered speechless in argument.
Bala ka / gazab ka – Terrible; the devil of a—-; ( used of good or bad things).
Bandar ki aashnayi –A troublesome friendship.
Bandar ki tarah nachana – Said of one who gives much trouble in sending a person here and there ( as of a master, by a servant ).
Bhari pathar choomker chorh dena – To kiss and say good bye to something admittedly good but burdensome.
Bhaagtey ki langoti – to rescue a iriffle from a wreck.
Barrey per charhana – To incite or allure by specious promises.
Beegi billi – Outwardly miserable like a soaked cat, but really mischievou.

used of sights, speeches,etc.
Bey hayayi ka burkha mooh per lena –To be brazenly
shameless.
Peeda utaana – To undertake
a mission or any big business. ( Formerly the man who volunteered picked up the
prepared paan leaf as a ssign)
Bey nakht sunana - To
abuse (gaali dena)
Bey waqt ki shahnaayi –To do a thing out of season
Bel mandhey charhna –
To be successful. ( Bel-creeper, and mandha its trellis work for climbing up)
